 Since 1992, Bunt & Associates has been retained by the University of Victoria to conduct its surveys of traffic access patterns to and from the university for a typical weekday condition, which are repeated every four years. Project tasks included:
- Large-scale traffic and transit counts to collect data about automobile drivers, automobile passengers, transit passengers, cyclists and pedestrians;
- Identifying current trends and changes in transportation activity patterns since previous survey; and
- Recommending design improvements to better accommodate cyclists at the University Drive access on the south side of the campus.
In 2006, Bunt was engaged by the University of Victoria to update the previous traffic surveys. This data was used by the University to monitor mode split of travel demand for staff, faculty and students arriving to campus and to compare to previous years data in order to determine the effectiveness of Transportation Demand Management programs designed to encourage alternative modes of transportation such as pedestrian, bicycle and transit usage. In addition, this project also undertook to estimate the number of trips being made daily and annually, trip lengths, vehicle classifications and fuel consumption in order estimate daily and annual GHG emissions. This study has formed a benchmark for future surveys once again to help determine the effectiveness of strategies to shift trips from motor vehicles more benign forms of transportation. Bunt is currently undertaking the 2008 traffic surveys.
